After months of planning and dreaming, you have come to a decision about your wedding cake. You want to make it a grand part of your big day. But merely deciding the size and flavour of the cake is just a fraction of the required task, and you need to take care of many other details.
Here are some tips for displaying your wedding cake:
Place it centre stage: Do not abandon your wonderful cake in the far, dark corner of a well lit cavernous banquet hall. You must put it in such a place that it does attract attention of all guests, but does not interfere in activities like dancing. Table placement must be discussed beforehand. Place the cake where it will be seen by everyone, but should be out of harm’s way.
A level table: You must use a level table. It must not be too big, as well. A cake of 6 inches will be dwarfed on a 12 inch table. The bride must take care that the cake table must be proportionate to the cake. Smaller cakes can be placed on tall cocktail tables. The extra height will surely pay off. But don’t place the cakes too high. Or else, even a decently sized cake will look like a cup cake.
Take care of linen: There are millions of ways to drape the cake table. A crisp white cloth will do well, but you can improvise with bows, gathers and ruffles to add to their presentation. Sometimes custom table linen for all tables may be too expensive, but one for the cake table will not harm your pocket. Remember not to use a white cloth for a white cake. To make the cake stand out, use contrasting colour for your cake table linen. Putting some thought into the colour combination will be rewarded in your wedding photos.
Cake stands: You can add drama and beauty to the cake by placing it on a high cake stand. A rustic cake can be placed on a stand made of wood or an elegant cake on a silver plate. But make sure the cake stand fits the cake snugly, and there is no risk of toppling over during the toasting ceremony.
Embellish table top: Dress the cake table with items that complement the cake. These include flowers, candles, framed photos or other decorative pieces loved by the bride. A sweet touch would be asking the wedding coordinator to relieve the bridesmaids of their beautiful and expensive bouquets and use them to embellish the cake table top.
Take care of time: Arrange for delivery of cake before the reception begins and it should be at least two hours before the event. Cakes are not usually assembled fully while transporting. Make sure you keep a person ready for setting it up.
More about the table: The base of the cake will determine the size of the table. The table should be sturdy and may be on wheels or light enough for two waiters to carry it. To decorate the table, wrap picture wire around the table top. You can attach garlands, sprays and swags using safety pins to the wires. Layer sheets to table cloth to make it full and elegant.
